Bronx Science Exposed

Usually the New York Times goes overboard in its effort to be fair, and that means that it always gives Ms. Reidy, the principal at Bronx Science, adequate space to spin her tale of responsible dictatorship. For example, she edits the student newspaper because the Smartest Kids in the City® and its faculty advisor aren't capable of doing the job themselves.

However, recently an American Arbitration Association fact-finder, after a thorough review, sided with 20 out of 22 math teachers who filed a complaint against Rosemarie Jahoda, the AP hired by Ms. Reidy to run the Math Department at Bronx Science, despite reported problems in her previous job at Stuyvesant High School. But, quick as a yellow rubber duckie can quack, the DOE counsel, David Brodsky, rejected the fact-finder's findings and conclusions, stating that several were "outside the jurisdiction" of the fact-finder. You can almost hear the squish of his rubber stamp, the usual response to criticism of the DOE. Father Bloomberg knows best.

The Riverdale Press and the Daily News both reported on the exchange. The New York Times started a City Room blog: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/28/bronx-science-complaints/. The blog at first included only the fact-finder's report but later added a link to Brodsky's response. And then came the comments!

The blog responses have been honest and interesting, and there has been little moderator interference. While a few have praised Ms. Jahoda and Ms. Reidy, many have taken issue with the Bronx Science administration. Including Dr. Bob in the Bronx.

And not a minute too soon! Quack!
